From Gynecological Procedures to Body Sculpting and Beyond — 3 Popular Cosmetic Surgeries of Today

Every year, providers do more than 15 million cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States, with more than 13 million of those being minimally invasive procedures, according to the Cleveland Clinic. While breast augmentations and rhinoplasties are likely to come to mind when thinking of the most popular cosmetic procedures, there are a few surprising ones that are topping the lists today. From the rise in body contouring procedures to the cosmetic options both men and women are investing in, here are just a few noteworthy procedures gaining traction as of late.

The demand for gynecological procedures

When it comes to some of the most popular innovative procedures out there, those that involve vaginal rejuvenation are certainly at the top of the list. Considered to be an umbrella term that covers a variety of procedures, vaginal rejuvenation can refer to clitoral hood reductions, vulvoplasty, labiaplasty, and vaginoplasty, to name a few. To highlight the sheer popularity of such procedures, healthywomen.org notes that while vaginal rejuvenation has been made famous by social media influencers, the global vaginal rejuvenation market is expected to reach an impressive $12 billion by 2026.

While many seek out a vaginal rejuvenation procedure to simply alter the cosmetic appearance of the genitalia or to enhance sexual response, though such procedures may also be sought after for another medical reason entirely. Labiaplasty surgery, for instance, is performed to treat labial hypertrophy or elongated labia minora. With that in mind, labiaplasty experts note that such a procedure works to provide patients with relief from friction and chafing that can result from exercise and sexual acticvity, while significantly improving the aesthetic appearance as well. In turn, not only could the result aid in making someone more comfortable, but can help in restoring confidence and well-being, too.

Body contouring

In addition to gynecological procedures and their rising popularity, body contouring has also seen a surge. Troy Pittman, M.D., a Washington D.C. based board-certified plastic surgeon notes “In late 2021, there was an increase in liposuction procedures. People are wearing pants again, and they’re realizing, gosh, my pants are fitting a little bit differently.” This may be largely due to the effects of the pandemic, as highlighted in an article by Allure.com. For example, research discovered that Americans gained an average of two pounds per week during a four month period from April 1, 2020 to June 1, 2020, according to a research study by the Journal of the American Medical Association and the University of California San Francisco.

Popular procedures for men

When looking at the most popular cosmetic procedures, it’s important to take into account that men are also wanting to improve their looks. In fact, more than 1.1 million men got a cosmetic enhancement in 2020. With that in mind, a rise in demand for a variety of male-focused cosmetic procedures include gynecomastia surgery, muscle enhancement and contouring, and even non-invasive procedures, like hair transplants, according to an article for plasticsurgery.org. New York City-based plastic surgeon Norman Rowe, M.D. (who created a second office just for men several years ago) talks about the popularity of such procedures in a late 2021 article, saying “About 70 percent of the male patients I see are getting something nonsurgical. They want quick pick-me-ups that require little downtime.” Dr. Rowe goes on to further say, “I’m getting a lot of requests lately for hair plug transplants.”

Whether influenced by the pandemic or made popular by celebs, there are a number of cosmetic procedures that are becoming increasingly popular as of late. From body sculpting to hair transplants and a variety of gynecological procedures, there’s no question that a variety of aesthetic procedures have gained traction as of late.
